“Are you getting settled in okay?” I asked my friend as I watched her fill two mugs with coffee and then slowly turn and limp toward the table where I was waiting. “Do you need anything? I never even considered your therapy appointments? Maybe we can . . .”

“It’s all taken care of, sweetheart. Stop worrying about me when you’ve got so much other stuff on your plate.”

“But if I worry about you, I can ignore everything else for a little bit.”

“What is there to ignore? We’re living in the swankiest hotel in Manhattan with people bending over backwards to make our stay here as easy as possible, yet you still find a reason to worry.”

“I’ve got to figure out where we’re going once I’ve fulfilled my end of the deal with Zach and start making plans so that we’re not blindsided when we finally find Tabitha. I have to find somewhere safe for us to land.”

“What place could be safer than sitting in the lap of mafia luxury? You’re living with the don of the Campana family who’s a founding member of The Four Families and wants to take care of you and your daughter. Why would you want to go on the run, Brett? I don’t . . .”

“I can’t be a hostage in this hotel forever, Sasha. I’ve got to be able to live my life and . . .”

“And you can’t do that from here? You work from home every day - how does your location make a difference? At this point, why do you even think you need to work? He wants you to marry him, Brett! If I were you, I’d be dragging that handsome man down the aisle within the hour, but instead, you’re trying to figure out how to put all of us in danger in some random, faraway town.”

“We won’t be in danger. Zach’s going to get us new identities and . . .” Sasha slowly shook her head as she stared into her coffee. “What?”

“Do you know how hard it is to escape this life? Once you’re on the radar, that never really goes away. You and Tabby will be looking over our shoulder waiting for God knows what to happen, and that will go on for the rest of your lives. Is that really any way to live?”

“You escaped the Russian mafia.”

“I don’t know where you got that idea because it couldn’t be farther from the truth. I’m still married to my husband, and even if I divorce him and turn my back on the vows I said during our wedding, the unspoken vows I made to him and his family won’t ever be rescinded.”

“What unspoken vows? What are you talking about? When we get our new identities you can forget you ever knew him and . . .”

Sasha scoffed, “I’m not leaving with you, Brett.”

“You have to! You’re not safe here, Sasha.”
